Product disclosure: These brushes were gifted to me by Fuumuui to try. The opinions here are my own.

If you know me, you’ll know I like to travel light. My sketching kit is pretty compact, and anything that goes into it really has to earn its place. So the double-ended design appealed to me straight away. Six brushes, but only three handles to carry around in my sketch bag.

The set has three double-ended handles with six synthetic brush heads: size 10 and 6 rounds, a size 2 detail, size 8 dagger, size 4 cat’s tongue and size 6 flat. Four of those are brush shapes I already use regularly. The dagger and cat’s tongue are new to me, so I’m interested to see whether I start reaching for them as I use the set more.

Given the sizes, these are really aimed at sketching and smaller paintings rather than large-scale watercolour work.

The brushes have glossy black handles that look good and feel nice in your hand. Of course, how a brush performs is what really matters, but I do like my art materials to look good too! I also like that the brush type and size are printed on each handle, which makes it easy to see which one I’m picking up.

The caps screw on rather than push on, so they feel secure and aren’t going to work loose in your sketch bag. The trade-off is that you can’t post the cap on the other end while you’re painting. They come in a brown case, though, and I’ve got into the habit of taking the cap off and popping it straight back into the case while I use the brush.

The brushes are made from synthetic squirrel hair, and I’ve been surprised by how much water and pigment they hold. They come to a lovely point and spring back into shape really well after use. I’ve also had no problems with hairs shedding, which is something I have experienced with other brushes.

I also think they’re really good value. Brushes can get pretty expensive, and getting six different brush heads in one compact set for this price seems very reasonable to me.

I really do like these brushes, and they’ve earned their place in my sketching kit. I think they’re going to become my go-to brushes for my A5 sketches.
