How I Teach Pen and Watercolour Sketching

Being a self-taught artist, I truly believe that anybody can learn to sketch. You don’t need some mysterious artistic gene — you just need the enthusiasm. The way I teach is to give you the what, the how and, most importantly, the why behind what I’m doing. If you understand the why, then when you’re sitting in front of a beautiful view with your sketchbook, you’ll be able to make your own choices — hopefully with my voice somewhere in the back of your head — and create a sketch that is yours, rather than simply copying mine.

My workshops and retreats are relaxed, friendly and encouraging. I want people to feel comfortable asking questions, trying things out and enjoying the process, without feeling that there’s a “right” way their sketch has to look. Most importantly, I want everyone to have fun and finish with a real sense of achievement.

I teach a simple step-by-step process, breaking a sketch down into manageable stages — from the initial pencil lines, through ink and the first light washes, to the final colour and details.
